Vans Warped Tour & Us

Vans Warped Tour & Us

May 25, 2018 0 By Bryan Swann

This year marks the final full cross country run of the Vans Warped Tour. Warped Tour has been a staple in the music industry since 1995 touring across the United States, and various other countries. The tour was always, truly something special. You would see such a mixture of huge established acts and up and coming bands, along with locals for each city the tour stopped in. Like many people across the world, this tour holds a special place in my heart and we wanted to chat with some people regarding this awesome tour. Take a look below and see what fans, musicians, and myself had to say about Vans Warped Tour!

Vans Warped Tour ’18

Bryan Swann (BareBones Ent)

What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

2012

Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

That’s a tough one. I have to go with Yellowcard, New Found Glory, and Sleeping with Sirens.

What band is Warped to you?

I would say New Found Glory and Reel Big Fish.

What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

I have had the privilege to see, and work with so many bands on this festival. This festival gave me the opportunity to get to meet and interview groups like Bowling For Soup, Echosmith, Watsky, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk, and so many more over the years.

How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

I was in complete shock. It really surprised me.

Are you attending?

Yes, I plan to.

Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

I am still so sad to see the end of this festival. It’s tough to say goodbye to something you have loved going to over the years, and your favorite events to work. I have so much respect for what Kevin Lyman built and can’t wait to see what is next. It will be tough attending that last date tough.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

KX: 2015

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

KX: Yellowcard

BS: What band is Warped to you?

KX: Set It Off

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

KX: Seeing and discovering new bands

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

KX: I was shocked and sad

BS: Are you attending?

KX: Yes

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

KX: It’s gonna suck not being able to go to a festival where so many of my favourite bands play every year and not have the opportunity to discover new bands in one place. I’m glad I was able to attend a couple tours before it ended!

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

TR: 2007

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

TR: I’ve got to go with either From First to Last or Silverstein. They both sounded just as good live and the energy from both the bands and the crowds during their live sets was electrifying.

BS: What band is Warped to you?

TR: I kept going through the list of the many, many bands I’ve seen on Warped and kept coming back to The Used. Their live show pretty much epitomizes the energy that I love so much about Warped Tour.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

TR: It isn’t so much one specific memory, but getting to actually meet and interact with the bands.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

TR: It’s bittersweet for me, but all good things must come to an end and I respect the decision. When it comes to music, television, etc. I always prefer for something like that to end while it’s still on a high note, rather than burning out and overstaying its welcome. I also don’t think the youth of today could ever appreciate Warped the way that my generation has and a lot of the bands that have made Warped what it is are either not together or just not playing shows like Warped anymore, so I think it was just its time.

BS: Are you attending?

TR: I plan to!

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

TR: I’ll always have the deepest love and appreciation for Warped Tour. There are so many bands and so many people that I would’ve never been introduced to without it. It’s the end of an era, for sure.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

JA: 2010

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

JA: So many. Neck Deep, Issues, Knuckle Puck, Mayday Parade, Sum 41, TSSF, Capsize, Real Friends… so many

BS: What band is Warped to you?

JA: All the pop punk bands, old and new.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

JA: Playing in 2012

Crowd surfing for my first time ever to Fatlip by Sum 41

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

JA: Indifferent. I used to LOVE the experience and go to multiple dates a summer and go all out. As I’ve gotten older, I realized: people suck, it gets too hot in Texas and I can see all those bands other times. I will miss the Warped exclusive merch though.

BS: Are you attending?

JA: I haven’t decided yet

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

JA: It’s been a staple in our scene for decades. It’s sad to see it go, and I have always wanted to do the full tour but I understand times are changing and excited to see what the future holds for the Warped brand.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

SR: I’ve actually never attended a Warped Tour, I’ve only worked on them. From 2013-2018.

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?
SR: Best band I’ve seen? Probably Bring me the Horizon in 2013.

BS: What band is Warped to you?

SR: What ‘band’ is Warped to me? Ummm, Less Than Jake. They’ve done it the most lol

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

SR: My favorite memory would be smoking blunts with Jeffree Star.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

SR: I was sad about the end of Warped, but all good things must come to an end. Not enough people appreciated it.

BS: Are you attending?

SR: Hell ya I’m back out this year.

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?
SR: I’m going to be a mess on the last date. I’ve met some of my best friends on Warped Tour, including my boyfriend and current roommates. I’m so thankful that I was able to close out the tour.

Warped Tour Dates

Alex S.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

AS: First year I went was 2008.

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

AS: Damn, it’s hard to narrow it down to just one, but I’d have to say Miss May I (Ventura, ’16), Atreyu (SanDeigo ’16), 3oh!3 (Ventura ’10), As I Lay Dying (Ventura ’08) The Black Dahlia Murder (Ventura ’13), and The Ghost Inside (Ventura ’12). I’ve been to damn near 20 stops, so narrowing it down to one is impossible for me lol

BS: What band is Warped to you?

AS: Pennywise, Reel Big Fish, MCR, and 3oh!3 all just scream warped tour.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

AS: Hoooo boy, there’s a few. I can’t remember who’s set it was during, but introducing a crowdkillers jaw to my elbow, that was a good time lol. Surviving on free jerky and monster all day and somehow not passing out from dehydration, sunburns, and pit friends. You make friends with as many people as you can in the pit and they’ll back you up for the whole day.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

AS: I was absolutely floored when I found out. It was such an out of the blue, at least for me, thing to happen. Totally ruined my entire day lol.

BS: Are you attending?

AS: Oh, without question. I haven’t missed a stop since 2008, and I’ll be damned if I miss the last one.

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

AS: Warped tour has been a defining part of my summers since I was like 16, so I feel like a small part of me is dying lol, like, me and a group of friends even made an annual pseudo-pilgrimage down to San Diego for it starting in 2011, which went from only going down there for a couple days to a week long vacation. It’s sad to see it go, but I’m excited to see what takes its place in terms of size and prestige.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

CR: 2004

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

CR: Bad Religion, would have loved for them to be on this years as the last or From first to last. I was a complete fangirl

BS: What band is Warped to you?

CR: Less than Jake or NOFX.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

CR: Hard to put it at just one. I met so many bands and cool people over the years.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

CR: I’m pretty bummed. Its always kind of been my summer staple.

BS: Are you attending?

CR: Yes, twice. Seeing it in my current town and flying into my hometown in FL

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

CR: It’s gonna be a bummer not having warped to look forward to. It had a great run, I’m looking forward to what’s to come after though.

(Spotify/iTunes)

BS: What was the first year you attended as a fan?

SG: The first year I attended was 2002, but it wasn’t as a fan. I volunteered for a few vendors at the tour.

BS: What year did you play the tour?

SG: 2013

BS: What was that experience like for you?

SG: As a band it was wild and fast paced, but also everything I had dreamed of as a kid growing up and wanting to be a musician.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

SG: 2005-2008 going with friends and doing things we probably shouldn’t have been doing lol. But it was a blast.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

SG: I was pretty bummed, but also felt the heat of getting old myself.

BS: Are you attending?

SG: Absolutely!

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

SG: I hope it inspires more people like Kevin to do these types of tours for years and years to come! All industries and genres need a Warped Tour!

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

ERC: My first year at Warped was 2016, just after I finished middle school.

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

ERC: Silvertooth (Silverstein and Beartooth performing a supergroup joint-set) was incredible. There was a massive crowd all singing along and the crowd was wild.

BS: What band is Warped to you?

ERC: Either We The Kings or Sleeping With Sirens. Those bands that are influential to the scene, and bring people together, even if they’re not fans.

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

ERC: I got to meet Shane from Silverstein last year. I told him how much the bands’ new album meant to me, and he shook my hand and told me “That means so much to hear after what I went through writing it”.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

ERC: It wasn’t shocking. After how poorly 2017 sold it was rumored the tour was on it’s last leg. It’s really symbolic of how the scene is growing out of the mainstream. I mean when was it last relevant? You go and it’s a bunch of college dudes who look like they’ve outgrown the scene and teens who look like middle schoolers stuck in 2013. It sucks to say cause it’s such a great community, but it was no longer attractive to a generation growing up on fests like Soundset and Rolling Loud.

BS: Are you attending?

ERC: Of course! I mean, what kind of question is that? It’s the end of an era. There’s no other place where you can see all the bands that define the scene in one day. I’m sick of all the elitism “Oh this lineup isn’t punk enough” or “Oh, there aren’t enough big bands I wanna see”. If there are like 5 bands you like, you could try to see all of them, go meet them (for free usually) and go see some new bands: That’d still be a great day. But the point is to see and support new bands before they get big, and this year there are so many great bands: As It Is, Chase Atlantic, Issues, Waterparks, Don Broco, State Champs, Ice Nine Kills. These are the names you’ll hear on Alt radio in a few years, and I couldn’t be more excited.

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

ERC: I just want to thank the tour for giving the opportunity to so many people and artists an introduction to shows and concerts and the scene’s culture as a whole. It sounds cliché but it really is a community. I’m sure some fest will pick up the torch, but what other fest could bring all those great bands for under $50 a ticket, across the whole country and bring people from all walks of life together?

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

RS: 2004

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

RS: The Offspring (2005)

BS: What band is Warped to you?

RS: New Found Glory

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

RS: It was one of the later years that Yellowcard was on the tour. I believe it was 2012. It was a very very hot day on the blistering asphalt, but Yellowcard was closing out the show. Yellowcard was finally taking stage. The sun was setting and a cool breeze gave me the most surreal feeling. The mix of Yellowcard’s energy and the cool relief of the sunset reignited everyone’s energy. It was the best performance I’ve been a part of.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

RS: To me it made since, alot of the older bands are quitting, and sadly the scene is dying.

BS: Are you attending?

RS: I really want to, but I’m married with kids. Between paying bills and getting time off work, I don’t know.

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

RS: I’ll hold a lot of fond memories from my younger days attending Warped Tour. I cherish those moments and I go back to them now and again.

Jeff R.

BS: What was the first year you attended Warped Tour?

JR: 2016

BS: Who was the best band you have ever seen on the tour?

JR: Silent Planet

BS: What band is Warped to you?

JR: Mayday Parade

BS: What is your favorite memory of Warped Tour?

JR: Hanging with my best friends and seeing my favorite bands all in one place. Nothing like it.

BS: How did you react to the news that this would be the last year?

JR: I wasn’t surprised. But definitely sad.

BS: Are you attending?

JR: Of course.

BS: Any final thoughts on Warped or goodbyes?

JR: Sad to see it go but I know some amazing summer tours will be able to happen with everyone’s favorite heavy bands, because now they don’t have to compete against Warped in the summer.

Check out our other Warped 2018 content and fingers crossed we’ll be out interviewing again this year.
