Q and A with Set The SunSeptember 14, 2014
Set the Sun is a post-hardcore/metal band based out of Dallas, Texas consisting of members David Southern, Josh Strock, Shawn Robert, Landon Jett, and Kendrick Nicholson. The band is currently gearing up for the release of their debut album, while continuing to vigorously write new material and prepare for an extensive touring schedule. See what founding member and vocalist David Southern had to say to BareBones about all of the exciting endeavors his band is on the brink of.
TR: How did Set the Sun get started?
David: I started the band back in high school. I was originally in a cover band with some friends of mine and I had decided that I wanted to see what I could come up with on my own and started looking for some members to help me create music. After many people coming and going through the history of this band, I’ve still stood by the name and the love for making music, and playing it for people that enjoy it.
TR: I know you guys do a lot of contests and webcam chats. What does it mean to you to maintain that direct connection to your fans?
David: It’s a huge deal to us to keep connected with fans via internet because it has become such a vital way to reach out over the past five or so years. We love getting on webcam and often times even doing personal Skype calls to fans that like our music. After all, they are what keep us moving forward!
TR: What material are you working on now?
David: Right now we are working on our debut full length album. It has taken some time to find the sound we’re looking for, but [we] have finally found it, and are way too excited to show it to the world. We are just ready to put out a new and fresh sound in the scene right now, and believe that this album will do just that.
TR: What is your writing process like?
David: First, we usually decide on a topic for a song. Then typically KJ writes the instrumentals, followed by Shawn and I going over some vocal ideas—patterns, melodies, etc. We all sit down and help each other out with lyrics until we are completely happy with it, and often times things will change in the moment we are behind the mic tracking it.
TR: What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment so far as a band?
David: There are so many to name honestly, since I always like to set myself small goals in order to reach the large goal. For me personally, having every single one of my bandmates leave the band and being able to pick up right where I had left off was a huge accomplishment for me.
TR: What artists influence you?
David: Artists that are multi-talented have always really influenced me. Anyone from Dave Grohl to Bruno Mars I find to just be really talented musicians. Those are the people I really look up to—the ones that can do it all.
TR: What artist(s) would you most like to tour and/or collaborate with?
David: I would love to tour with bands like Slipknot, Foo Fighters, [and] Pierce the Veil. I think they fit extremely well with Set the Sun’s sound, and are great bands.
TR: What does it feel like getting to play a show with Vanna and Beartooth and how do you prepare for big shows like that?
David: It’s amazing! Getting an email or text about getting confirmed for something like that is always a great feeling. We typically practice when we can and all have time for it. We do a lot of practicing on our own as well, but mainly get together to run our set with full back tracks. Show day is always a bit hectic, but we always make it through pretty well.
TR: What is something people would be surprised to learn about your band?
David: I think people would be surprised to know that as of now, we really don’t play shows too often. We are in the process of getting tour-ready to hit the road once this album comes out!
TR: I know you guys are looking into playing Warped Tour next summer. What would being able to play a major festival like that mean for your band?
David: A tour like that would be huge for us—a complete game-changer. It’s one of the most popular tours in today’s scene and would be the best way for us to perform for all of the people we have reached out to. Hitting a new city every day like that would be something extremely special for this band.
TR: Anything else you’d like to say about your band to fans or to BareBones readers who have not heard your music before?
David: Thank you for continuing to support Set the Sun and we fucking love you for it! If you’ve never heard of us, please take a couple of minutes out of your day to listen and let us know what you think!
