BS: How did you get started in making music?
KR: Music is something I love to do and it has been since I was extremely young, but it wasn’t until 5th grade that I realized I wanted to do it as a profession. This was around the same time I realized being a princess was unfortunately out of the question. This was also around the time the TV show Hannah Montana became popular and I found the life portrayed very intriguing. It was around this time that I also participated in my town’s “American Idol Night” and won two years in a row. One year, I was awarded a guitar, which was a great reason to start learning how to play, so I did! I had already been playing piano for years. I just grew up playing music, truly.
BS: Who or what has been your biggest influence musically and why?
KR: I listen to a variety of music genres, which is why the songs are so diverse. I write about things that are happening in my life and have meaning.
BS: Why do you feel that people should be excited and check out your music?
KR: It’s different from any albums of it’s kind. It’s very unique and every song is so drastically different from the next. One song is a generational anthem, while another could make you fall in love. While they’re all different, the album manages to tie together so perfectly.
BS: When you’re not making music what do you like to do?
KR: I’m really big into meditation. There are times when I’m just out with friends and I’m just like “Ugh I’d rather be meditating right now”, haha. But really, it just makes me so happy and makes me feel so much better and calmer, no matter what is going on in my life at that time. Everyone needs to do nothing every once in a while.
BS: What is your current guilty pleasure?
KR: I’m currently an avid watcher of Parks and Recreation. I’m obsessed with Amy Poelher. I’ve got to go get her audiobook. She’s hilarious and Leslie Knope is just incredible. I get very into TV shows.
BS: You just released a video for your song, “Now Revolution”. It looks like that was a fun video to make. What was that experience like for you?
KR: It was incredible. All the other teenagers in the video were my friends from school, so there was a lot of messing around and having fun. We enjoyed ourselves. It was a wonderful first music video experience.
BS: If you could only use one word to get people pumped for the upcoming EP, what would it be and why?
KR: Empowering. Definitely There’s a song on there called “Stronger” and it will just get you feeling strong and powerful And another song called “Everywhere You Go”, which encourages the power of love.
BS: What is something about you that may surprise fans?
KR: I really like video games. Is that surprising? I feel like it could be. I grew up with four older brothers. Nintendo is seriously a part of my psyche. They’re just so fun and they remind me of my home and my family.
BS: When can fans hope to see you in their city next?
KR: Hopefully very soon. A tour is pending
BS: Any city you’d especially dream of playing in and why?
KR: Actually, my dream is to play Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado, right near my hometown. It’s the most beautiful venue I’ve ever had the pleasure of going to. So many artists say that it’s a surreal feeling to perform there, and I can only imagine how incredible it would be.
BS: Anything else you would like to say to your fans out there?
KR: You can find all my social media through my website at kateryan.co. My music is on iTunes, Amazon, Soundcloud, and so many more. Thank you so much for reading, listening, hearing, understanding. I truly hope that we can connect through my music and maybe even through Twitter! I love talking to people, particularly about music. Thanks again and stay smiling!
